sarratt family connection to roane county, tennessee

what follows are the raw census and marriage notes and transcripts i’ve made in the last two days on the family of daniel p sarratt and rachel hass of jackson co, al. as i sort them out, i’ll post changes, additions, deletions, etc. meantime, i’m hoping these will help someone and will lead them to contact me and help clarify who rachel hass’ parents were.

daniel p. sarratt (1847-1907) and rachel hass (1850-1912) are 2d great-grandparents of mine. their daughter, jimmie l. “lula” sarratt (1875-1942) married william a. “bud” phillips (1876-1943) 23 jan 1894 in jackson co, al. lula and bud phillips couple settled in tennessee - early on in hamilton county and later in south harriman, roane co, tn.

note: census images were viewed online at heritage quest. the census information here does not represent all the census work i’ve done on my sarratt line; what is here was census work done in conjunction with trying to sort out rachel hass’ family.

Sarah HASS, age 49, is in the 1860 Cherokee Co, AL census. She was a farmer enumerated two households
after Johnathan SARRATT in Blue Pond for that census. I am convinced that this is Rachel HASS‘ mother
and that the Peter in the household after Sarah’s is Rachel’s brother. I cannot locate Rachel for this census!
She would have been 10 or 11. There are two HASS children in the Cherokee Co census in the household (556/556)
of Andrew and Lucy DEARING. Andrew is a farmer. Both he and Lucy were born in GA. Lucy is likely his mother.
He is 32 and a farmer. She is 70 and listed with the occupation of “Domestic.” The HASS children in that household:
Japsey, 7, male, born in AL and
Sarah L., 5, female, also born in AL.

In addition to the two HASS children, there is a Lucy DEARING, 2 months old. This is a very confusing household!

This is indicative of the difficulty involved in researching this family surname! At Heritage Quest online,

1880 - Jackson Co AL - Daniel and Rachel SARRATT

The 33 year-old Daniel is found with Rachel and some of his children in this 1880 Alabama census. Household information recorded follows:

Sallie A. FIELDER is listed as a daughter, but I have no other information at all for her so far (Jan 2004). Mary GAY, listed
as “mother-in-law” is also puzzling unless, as seems possible from this entry, Daniel was married before Rachel HASS
and had a daughter and now both that daughter and his first wife’s mother are living with Daniel and Rachel.
Further research is certainly needed.

b abt 1849 in AL of a father b in KY and a mother b in NC. Ettia [HASS] is recorded as being born to a mother and father
both born in NC. “Our” Rachel HASS was born about 1850, and according to all census reports, was born in AL.
So: this family should be in AL for the 1850 census, if we’re lucky.

Sarah HASS, age 49, is in the 1860 Cherokee Co, AL census. She was a farmer enumerated two households
after Johnathan SARRATT in Blue Pond for that census. As I said above, I am convinced that this is Rachel HASS’ mother
and that the Peter in the household after Sarah’s is Rachel’s brother. I am also convinced that this 1880 Sallie HASS is the same person as the 1860 Sarah HASS. [See above for 1860 HASS and DEARING information and notes.]

Nikki, I think we’re cousins if you’re descended from Peter Hass! The family did indeed
move to south Morris County in the NE corner of TX, and some of us are still here.
This is what I can tell you: My father, Archie Leon Hass, Sr., was born in Jenkins Community,
Morris Co., Texas on June 4, 1919 to William Haywood and Vada Campbell Hass. William Haywood
Hass was born to James Marshall and Mary Gilliam Hass on June 7, 1895 in Pisgah, Jackson Co., AL.
James Marshall Hass was born on Mar. 15, 1860 (unknown birthplace in AL) to Peter and
Peggy Smith Hass. Peter was the son of Rev. John and Elizabeth Rather Hass who were married
in Madison County, Alabama on Oct 26, 1822. Rev. John ‘Bushyhead’ Hass is indeed Cherokee,
we believe him to be a reservee - but he was so beloved, his chapel was dismantled and carried
to OK on the Trail Where Tears Were Shed and reassembled. My brothers and I plan to go up to
see the chapel before the summer’s out. We honestly had no idea we were Cherokee having been
told all our lives that we were ‘Black Dutch.’ The last two-three years have been quite a journey
of discovery and self-realization, needless to say. Feel free to e-mail me (if it doesn’t appear with
this message, my e-mail address is “phoxphirephrog@aol.com”).
I’m anxious to hear from you and compare notes. By the way,
we pronounce our last name just like it looks - not Hoss, or Haus, but HASS, as in jack—
!!! How about you? Fondly, Alfreda (Freda) Hass

I wonder if anyone has any information on Rachel Hass who married Daniel Sarratt in Jackson County, AL.
They are both buried along with 2 children in “Sarratt Cemetery-Pleasant View area of Jackson County, AL”
This cemetery is online at Al Gen Web under cemteries.
Rachel and Daniel are my wifes gr grandparents and no one seems to know anything about them.
Daniel’s father was Jonathan Sarratt md Dillia (?)
Any information or clues about the family would be appreciated. Nothing is known about

The National Cemetery provides some historical background about the cemetery:

Rock Island National Cemetery was established within the confines of the U.S. Arsenal located on Rock Island in the Mississippi River near the cities of Davenport, Iowa, and Moline, Ill. In 1863 an area was set aside to bury Union soldiers who died while serving as guards at the large Confederate prison camp established on Rock Island by the U.S. government….. Between 1863 and 1865, the federal government established a second cemetery of a little more than two acres for the burial of Confederate prisoners of war. Approximately 1,950 soldiers died at the Rock Island Confederate Prison, founded there in 1863. The first POWs, captured during the battles of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge in Tennessee in November 1863, arrived in December. Throughout the war, Confederates were brought to Rock Island from battle areas throughout the South; eventually, more than 12,000 POWs were confined there. Prisoners died from a variety of causes, including exposure to the cold, harsh winters, malnutrition and diseases such as smallpox.
